This beautiful piece of African art is carved to resemble the potent African pepper. Both a male and a female are crafted in this fashion to honor the men and women who spend countless hours each day under the scorching sun hand picking these firery fruits. Wearing loose wraps around their bodies and coverings upon their caps, the Pepper Heads venture out into the brush for a long days work. The traditional meaning behind this piece of African art is that "the mouth that eats the pepper when wishing either good or bad, will have their wishes granted".

The African pepper has grown wild in Africa for centuries. Typically added to African soups and stews, this pungent pepper is also processed into an extract for commercial food use. The African pepper in ground powder form is sold as an extreme version of cayenne pepper and can also be packaged in capsule form for the pharmaceutical industry. When added to soups, the African pepper is placed in the pot whole and removed before serving. In Senegal, the African pepper is sold in a smoked version and used as a spice rub. The taste of an African pepper has been described as a mixture of cubep pepper and nutmeg that also packs a pungent punch.

Hand carved entirely from African Sese wood by local artisans residing in Ghana, Pepper Heads African art piece is crafted with extreme precision and attention to detail. Long slender shapes are finished with redish hues to portray a mature African pepper.

Pepper Heads has a width of 6 inches (15.24cm) and a length of 26 inches (66cm). The combined weight for both the male and female African figures is approximately 1.9 pounds (0.86kg).

The product weight, color and size may vary slightly from the stated information since these items are uniquely handcrafted resulting in minor inconsistencies.

CONTENTS: One Pepper Heads African wall hanging, consisting of both the female and male piece, arrives packaged in a secure shipping carton.
